Floriculture
As a part of diversification of activities, KFDC has started cultivation of high altitude orchid in its Munnar Division with the financial aid under WGDP and technical assistance from Tropical Botanical Garden Research Institute, Palode. The main objectives of the scheme are :-
1) To establish a high tech floriculture exhibit unit displaying high altitude cool loving orchids and other commercially important floriculture plants.
2) To develop the centre as a tourist destination.
3) To provide employment to the poor especially the tribals.
4) To offer training and extension activities/guidance in orchid cultivation, harvesting etc. to small scale growers.
Cultivation of orchid started in 2000 by importing 200 Nos. of Cymbidium variety from Kalimpong, Sikkim. The orchids have been multiplied in our centre and the number has increased to 1150. As part of the orchid floriculture, a satellite centre for display and well equipped tissue culture laboratory has been established near KFDC Division Office in Munnar.
Entry charges to the Floriculture centre from 1-4-2010 have been enhanced to Rs 10/ per head. During 2009-10 abovt 2.90 lakh tourists have visited this centre. |
